If you’re anything like me, your dog is more than just a pet-they’re family. That’s why I love that Dog Mom Day and Mother’s Day are right next to each other in May. It’s the perfect excuse to celebrate all the love and joy our pups bring into our lives, right alongside the traditional Mother’s Day festivities. Whether you’re a dog mom, a human mom, or both, here are some of my favorite ways to make this double holiday extra special.
Picnic in the Park-with Your Pup, of Course!
One of my favorite ways to celebrate is with a good old-fashioned picnic. There’s just something about lounging on a blanket in the sun, surrounded by fresh air and wagging tails, that feels so joyful.
- Pick the perfect spot: I look for a dog-friendly park with lots of shade and space to roam.
- Pack for everyone: My basket always includes sandwiches, fruit, and maybe a sweet treat for me, plus dog-safe snacks like carrot sticks and blueberries for my pup.
- Don’t forget the essentials: I never leave home without waste bags and a pack of cleaning wipes. Trust me, they come in handy for muddy paws, sticky fingers, or the occasional spilled treat!
- Set up and relax: I spread out a big blanket, toss a ball for my dog, and just soak in the moment. Sometimes I’ll bring a book, but honestly, watching my dog explore is entertainment enough.
Hit the Trails for an Adventure
If you and your dog love a little adventure, a scenic hike is a fantastic way to bond and get some exercise.
- Find a dog-friendly trail: I use local apps or websites to find trails that welcome dogs.
- Pack smart: Water for both of us, a few snacks, and a sturdy leash are must-haves. I also bring my phone for those “look at us conquering the world” selfies.
- Take it slow: I let my dog set the pace, take plenty of breaks, and enjoy the sights and smells along the way. The best part? The post-hike cuddles when we’re both happily tired.
Try a Pet-Friendly Restaurant
Did you know more and more restaurants now have patios where dogs are welcome? It’s such a treat to have brunch or lunch with my pup by my side.
- Call ahead: I always check if the spot is truly pet-friendly and if they have water bowls or even a dog menu.
- Bring a mat: A little blanket or mat helps my dog settle in while I eat.
- Enjoy the moment: There’s something so fun about sharing a meal with your furry best friend-and it always gets a smile from fellow diners.
Host a Backyard Dog Mom Party
Why not invite a few fellow dog moms and their pups over for a backyard get-together? It’s a great way to celebrate together and let the dogs have a blast.
- Keep it simple: I set up a few toys, maybe a kiddie pool if it’s warm, and plenty of fresh water.
- Treats for all: I bake some easy dog treats and put out snacks for the humans, too.
- Fun and games: Sometimes we’ll have a “best trick” contest or just let the dogs play while we chat and share dog mom stories.
At-Home Spa Day for Two
After all the fun, a little pampering is always welcome. I love turning a regular grooming session into a mini spa day.
- Doggy bath time: I use a gentle shampoo, give my pup a good brush, and maybe even a little massage.
- Self-care for me: While my dog dries off, I’ll put on a face mask or do my nails. It’s the perfect excuse to slow down and relax together.
Make Memories with Crafts and Photos
I’m a sucker for keepsakes, so I love doing something creative to remember the day.
- Paw print art: With some non-toxic paint, I make a paw print next to my handprint on canvas. It’s messy, but so cute!
- Photo session: Matching bandanas or flower crowns make for adorable photos. I print my favorites and add them to a scrapbook or hang them up at home.
Final Thoughts
Celebrating Dog Mom Day and Mother’s Day together is all about honoring the love we share with our pups and our families. Whether you’re out adventuring, relaxing at home, or just snuggling on the couch, the best memories come from the simple joy of being together. So grab your picnic basket (and those cleaning wipes!), hug your pup tight, and make this double holiday one to remember.
